Medicare

A universal health scheme, intended to provide affordable treatment by doctors and in public hospitals for all Australians and permanent residents.

Medicare card

Residents with a Medicare card can get cheaper treatment from most doctors and free treatment in public hospitals. Visitors from certain countries may also have limited access to Medicare.

Ovaries

A pair of glands in a woman that produce an egg each month after the onset of puberty until menopause. They about the size and shape of an almond, and are found on either side of` the uterus.

Pap smear

Where cells are wiped off the cervix to check for any changes that may lead to cervical cancer in the future.

Pneumonia

A severe inflammation of the lungs. The person will usually have a high fever, chills, chest pain and cough.

Prostate gland

A gland that sits under the bladder in a male that makes some of the fluid in semen. Shaped like a doughnut.

Rectum

The lower portion of the large intestine (bowel), that ends in the anal canal.

Reproductive organs (system)

The male and female body parts that enable reproduction (eg. penis, vagina, uterus).
